Painting tin ornaments

DIA DE MUERTOS FALL AUCTION BENEFIT 2018

Our Dia de Muertos Auction Benefit had a few changes this year—location, time of day, and food. Plus there was a special activity—painting tin ornaments! The 13th annual event was held on November 3, 2018, at Pioneer Memorial Park in Sequim from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Quesadillas and other snacks were provided.

As in the past there was a beverage bar where beer and wine were available. We also had Mexican wedding cookies—these continue to be a favorite of many. The event was well-publicized—including a wonderful article by Diane Urbani de la Paz which appeared on the front page of the Peninsula Daily News the day before. This was a nice surprise and we thank her and the PDN for helping us get the word out—especially with the change of venue.

Taking charge of the kitchen

Board members Steve Gilchrist, Martha Rudersdorf, Beth Fetrow and John Boetsch took charge of the kitchen with their hard-working helpers, and the result was quesadillas made fresh for each visitor.

Board members Cathy Van Ruhan, Kathy Purcell and Judith Pasco arranged the auction and sales tables and set and decorated the tables for visitors to sit and enjoy the eats and the music. They had a few helpers as well.

The auction items included many one-of-a-kind hand-made pieces from the women in Chiapas. From thousands of miles away, a part of them was with us in the products they handcrafted.

During the program portion, board members Kathy Purcell, Beth Fetrow and Marth Rudersdorf each read a letter written by one of the scholarship recipients. This was very moving and touched the hearts of those in attendance. Through their own words, we got to feel first-hand the impact we make on the lives of these indigenous women and girls.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to all those who attended and to all those who continue to partner with us to assist in educating these students who have such a thirst to learn. Your generosity is appreciated, especially by those who benefit so greatly in Chiapas.
